A decade later than it should have, Call of Duty is coming back to Nintendo. Developer Infinity Ward has confirmed that the upcoming Modern Warfare 4 will not need to be compromised in the ways that have become common practice for Nintendo releases. At Gamescom this week, the game’s creators provided some insight into how well the Switch 2 can handle the demands of such a high-end shooter. Jack Hoppus, Multiplayer Technical Director for Modern Warfare 4, and Beatriz Gonzalez, Associate Production Director at Digital Legends, were able to provide insight into what it took to create Modern Warfare 4 for the Switch 2 and the difficulties in bringing the franchise back to Nintendo. Hoppus stated that he was surprised by the power of the Switch 2 when compared to the current PS4 and XBOX ONE.
As a result of the comparative power of the Switch 2 relative to the other two major gaming systems (PS4/XBOX ONE), Modern Warfare 4 may prove to be a technically relevant third-party title released for Nintendo’s new console.
Thus, Switch 2 owners may find themselves playing a version of Modern Warfare 4 that is comparable to the versions available for PS4/XBOX ONE rather than having to settle for a scaled-down version.
Infinity Ward States Switch 2 Didn’t Demand Significant Compromises
Speaking with Gamereactor at Gamescom, Hoppus explained that Infinity Ward found the Switch 2 version “really comparable.”
le to consoles, like PlayStation and Xbox.”
The team felt liberated by the platform, as it offered new possibilities instead of imposing severe hardware limitations that would necessitate removing features.
Gonzalez emphasized that a main goal for the development team was to maintain the essential feel of Call of Duty in this new version. Digital Legends also made sure that a player’s movement, reaction time, and overall gameplay would be consistent with previous versions of the series.

While the Switch 2 had some unique hardware requirements, Modern Warfare 4 will run in both portable and docked mode so players can play the action-oriented title in either format and still enjoy the same core features. A lot of effort went into how players could interact with the platform using various input methods such as the Pro Controller, Joy-Con controllers, gyroscope sensors, and even a mouse. Each input method has been fine tuned to allow for a higher level of accuracy.
As a result, the Nintendo Switch 2 version provides a greater degree of flexibility for players to choose between utilizing traditional gaming controllers or experimenting with motion-sensing and/or mouse-controlled configurations depending upon their own preferences.
Switch 2 Gamers Will Stay Linked to the Broader Multiplayer Community

Digital Legends and Infinity Ward, developers of Modern Warfare 4, have outlined how players on the Nintendo Switch 2 (a hypothetical successor to the Nintendo Switch) are going to integrate into Modern Warfare 4’s multiplayer community. Players on the Switch 2 will enter into a larger player population where they can compete against other players who use either controller-based or keyboard-mouse input methods. Players wishing to play exclusively with players from their own system will also have the ability to filter match-making to only include players from their own platform.
In addition, players on the Switch 2 will contribute to the greater interconnected network. Modern Warfare 4 is due out on October 23rd; it represents the return of the Call of Duty series to Nintendo platforms. As long as Infinity Ward’s promises come true, players on the Switch 2 should be able to experience a version of Modern Warfare 4 that is comparable to the PlayStation and Xbox versions while still enjoying the unique control options provided by Nintendo.
